Letters of Apology

When you’ve hurt someone’s feelings or caused a person undue trouble, spring into action. First, do your best to apologize in person. Follow that up with a letter of apology. It’s important to state very clearly the effect your behavior or thoughtlessness had on someone. It’s also important to offer to make amends if at all possible.

We are very quick to expect a prompt apology when someone wrongs us. By turns, then, we need to be willing to apologize quickly ourselves. It’s never comfortable to apologize, yet when we let time pass before we do—or worse, we don’t bother to apologize at all—we breed resentment in the person we have wronged. Big mistake all around.

For example, “Dear Marilyn, last night’s snafu never should have happened, but it did. I can’t tell you how embarrassed and sorry I am for missing your dinner party. I put it on the calendar for next week, which was careless and inconsiderate of me. Your dinner parties always are so extraordinary that frankly, I can’t believe I actually blanked out on the date. You always lavish so much attention on not only serving delicious food, but also on every beautiful detail. You deserve much better attention from me, and I hope you’ll forgive me for the worry and trouble I’ve caused. I also hope that you’ll let me take you to dinner soon. I’ll call you in the next couple of days.”

Or, “I thought I was being so witty and clever when I made those remarks yesterday. In reality, I was being childish, inconsiderate, and probably seemed even arrogant. Please know that I never deliberately would hurt your feelings in a million years. I have no idea what came over me or how I could have been so clueless. I do know this: I’ve learned a lesson, and you can be sure that I’ll be a lot less enthusiastic with my biting commentary in the future. I just hope you’ll forgive me and we can put my stupid behavior behind us. You’re an important friend to me, and I’ll do better to be a worthy steward of that gift.”
